Using Search Engine Optimization As A Tool To Build Traffic
Many webmasters are constantly trying to get on top by tweaking their websites, some go as far as using black hat methods that trick the search engines, but this normally only lasts for the short run. When you hear the term search engine optimization, this just means a webmaster is optimizing his/her site to rank high among the search engines. Which leads to the burning questions: what is search engine optimization? The problem here is that most people think search engine optimization is like magic and that only search engine "gurus" have all the answers. Search engines have come along way and new methods are constantly being used for this. Search engine optimization is the means through which you can kick start the process of doing business on the World Wide Web.
Keywords
You must skillfully place your keywords in your web page in a manner that conveys the information that is being searched for by your visitor. The keywords should be placed in the title tag, meta description tag and at the beginning of the body tag sections. Keywords are the foundation on which the entire search engine system works. Include the target keywords in the text of the page. Don't overdo it, though, the keywords should fit smoothly into the surrounding text. When researching keywords the keyword phrases used should mimic the phrases that internet users would use. Don't forget to optimize your webpage, this is very important this way when the search engines see your page they see all the content with keywords integrated through out.
Title
Words people are most likely to search on put first in the title (called "keyword prominence"). Remember, this title is your entire identity on the Search engines. A title is nothing but a focal point of the content written in your page. But remember it should not be too long, at most it could be 60-80 characters long. The title should be relevant and not misleading, while still emphasizing keywords.
Content
If you even want to be included in Google index then you must have original content on your website. If you don't have good content and only put keywords on a page the search engines will rank this page because there is no unique content.
Links
You must make sure the links are organic and relevant, which means they must relate to the topics of your own site. Besides content on your site there are many other factors and many other marketing techniques needed to establish top rank on the search engines, one of the techniques is building one way links. Links act like a voting system to search, the more links the more votes that the site is popular. However, you must be stringent about who you link to and how many links you have. Getting "reciprocal links" is free and builds your Pagerank. Make sure the anchor text includes a link back to your site, this is what the search engines detect and include with rankings sites. It's also very time consuming but can be worthwhile if you get a few strong links from it. These links can "lead" the search engines directly to your site and get you indexed faster. |
